Laugh a little with numerology

Numerological claims to determine personality, life and "fate" of people from their name, surname and date of birth. Some people may try to make you believe that the calculations made by numerologists are complicated, but it is not. Instead, everything is made by numerologist CM1 program, since no more than the Euclidean division by 9.

The arguments against numerology are numerous. I give a few in my book When the numbers are losing the ball. If you read English, you tend to see the impressive work but very readable Underwood Dudley, Numerology: Or What Pythagoras Wrought, which is much more complete.

The comedians have found, through numerology, a topic of choice. André Sauvé and his delightful art of the unspoken and silence or Florence Foresti, always good at playing with words.

Macaques Democrats?

A macaque Tonkean. (source)
Odile Petit is "behavioral scientist" at CNRS. She summarized research on various collective behaviors of primates (and other animals - in the second part of issue) on the air of France Culture, December 27, 2010, in issuing Continent Science.

The researcher traced the issue essentially an outline of the social organization of macaques Tonkean. In these animals, the dominant individuals alone do not determine the behavior of groups, such as travel. Instead, group members seem to suggest directions of movement. Odile Petit and his collaborators were able to show that the collective decisions of the group are under a system which can be likened to a form of democracy, far from the tyrannies that usually imagined in primates.

The concepts of quorum and vote "are advanced by ethologists. For more information on this exciting business, you can read a paper in French by Bernard Thierry, or see this article in English, published in 2009. Also read the book I help myself either, appeared Vuibert.

The social space of faces

Although morphopsychology, which intends to describe the personality from the shape of faces, does not seem very scientific (eg wikipedia or this article), we use every day in an intuitive morphopsychology.

The faces in particular give us an impression more or less dominance and reliability. It concludes that Alexander Todorov, a researcher at Princeton, in a recent article. Todorov shows through factor analysis that dominance and reliability are the two main factors that help classify the faces according to the idea that personality is associated.

The image above shows these two characteristics. We see that the dominance is associated with the character "square" face, and reliability to smile more than the intrinsic shape of the face. Other features of the faces are more or less consensual, as the attractiveness (more or less attractive), or the threat.

Todorov goes further, explaining that some of the faces give, when they are neutral, a feeling of joy or anger. We tend to assign personality traits corresponding to the character ... often wrong.

Effect "White Bear"

Daniel Wegner, a researcher at the University of Virginia at the time, is known for an experience of 1987, which highlights some aspects of intrusive thoughts and how they may turn into obsessions, an important point for study of OCD (obsessive compulsive).

Wegner asked participants to say, for 5 minutes, everything was going through their head. As a group, especially not asked to think of a polar bear (read the article by Wegner, 1987). In another, among other things to think about a white bear. The results are that participants often cite the polar bear when you ask them not to think that when they are told to think. This "ironic effect" (read this article Wegner, 1994) explains why the intrusive thoughts can become true obsession: trying not to think about it, it reinforces them.

In another experiment, Wegner shows that an effective strategy is to set a specific distractor: it has got less polar bears by asking participants to think of a red car at the prospect that the bear stood . Jacques van Rillaer exposes French experiences in a recent article published in Science and pseudo-science.

How do self-improvement projects

The path to good self-esteem
To get to be better about ourselves, how we enjoy and be confident, we must work the concept of self-esteem. That is, our own assessment or, as many people call the "self."

To do so, we have already commented Eliceo Reading about self-esteem, how to improve self-esteem, and now I will approach a way to develop self-improvement projects so that everyone will get valued more and therefore bear a life more enjoyable.

As a first step we must realize that these projects are a way to improve and get certain things we want. And to achieve these objectives, a wave of positivity flood the body and which will increase self esteem. To do these projects, consider four steps.

First: Get a clear objective and concrete. Here we must consider what we want to accomplish, achieve or what we want to do, bearing in mind that the goal should be:

Honest. What we really want.
Personal. The goal should be something we do not tell us anything else.
Realistic. See who can really achieve, otherwise it would fail to minimize self-esteem.
Some examples include: Adopt a matter, improve a personal appearance, save money, improve the relationship with someone, etc.

Second, specify the tasks to achieve the objective. Rinse the objective is to determine how to do to get and set a sensible time to be realized (three weeks, a month, etc.). Remember that it is a path and the goal is achieved by walking the same facts and not take shortcuts.

For example, if the goal is to pass a subject, the tasks will be: get the program of study, consult libraries, ask opinions of those who know the subject, contacting the teacher, make and clarify doubts, and so on. And this will take time which can vary depending on the amount of study material there.

Third: Organize your tasks in a particular order. If the tasks are done at the same time, we fall into the disadvantage that it is impossible to achieve the objective. It is therefore necessary to establish the order of the tasks and thus build a work plan. The order should be logical.

Fourth: Begin to perform the tasks and evaluate how they are developed. Here we are in the implementation of the proposed improvement. It is important that, as they are performing the tasks of the plan, be evaluated to see if there is something to change or not. If one can not be impartial at this point, it is good to ask advice or view a friend or relative.

Build knowledge

If creativity is the ability to think beyond accepted ideas, combining original and acquired knowledge, it is clear that it is related to divergent thinking and the right hemisphere, but this creativity is useful in so far as intelligence goes action and directs the behavior using the information captured, learned and developed. That is, for creativity to materialize in a helpful idea is to convert the original suggestions about innovations to meet adequately the needs of society and that only takes the intervention of convergent thinking.

Therefore, this approach does not cause any shadow of doubt about the role of the right hemisphere which raises the creative abilities to understand, enhance and build knowledge but the evaluation phase of the creative thought process should be governed by the left hemisphere is that ultimately transform creative works in innovation.

The innovations are what make possible the evolutionary development of societies breaking new ground and, although the information reaching one hemisphere of the brain are unknown to the other, arise brain connections and associations that later give birth to innovation.

Knowledge and Creativity

Lately, many people are claiming the importance of creativity in knowledge creation.

It all started with the work of Guilford, who, in the late forties, proposed a model of intelligence that marked a before and after the analysis of creativity. Distinguished between convergent thinking and divergent thinking. The first type of thinking, it advocates that there is only one correct solution to every problem. Based on our previous knowledge, logically ordered information available to reach the clear solution that ends the problem. Divergent thinking, however, discerned and provides several options that lead to multiple responses, being able to be, all of them correct.

The pioneering studies of Guilford tie in with the findings of Sperry. According to the neurologist, who won the Nobel prize in 1981 for his valuable discoveries, the cerebral hemispheres do not process the same information but share the tasks. The left hemisphere is responsible for the global aspects of the communication, analyzes the information heard and the written and body language.

This part of the brain is home to convergent thinking sparked by Guilford since it works in a logical and rational but fails, however, abstract and complex relationships. As the right hemisphere, it adheres to the processing of nonverbal information. He is interested in images, feelings, emotions and spatial information. It inhabits the processing occurrences divergent thinking, fantasies, and intuitions.

Things to learn from Barack Obama Campaign

The campaign that brought Barack Obama to become president of the United States will be remembered as the first in the country that successfully used social networking sites, sending mass e-mail messages and mobile devices to the voting population, known as Web 2.0 tools. But perhaps most significant was that this political contest explored the alternatives offered by information technology and communications to achieve a more direct and transparent with the public when the candidates aspiring to the government and when they assume power.

This was stated Kartik Raghavan, who worked on the team Information Technology and Communications for the candidate's campaign and Barack Obama participated in the Transition Team of the current U.S. president. He is currently advisor to the Bill and Melinda Gates Foundation.

In his participation as keynote speaker at the Forum on Innovation and Modernization Government 2009, held in Mexico City, Raghavan recalled that the presidential transition process the main objective was to make it more participatory and transparent as possible. "We wanted all Americans knew what was going on in this process and that all agreements and documents generated will be presented to the citizens."

The tomato lovers

Joel Sternheimer (aka Evariste the time he was a singer) is the inventor of a theory, Genod which rescucitation myth plant lovers. Against the backdrop of a scientific discourse, he rehabilitated the idea that music can help plants grow. For this, he claims that use melodies called protéodies, sequences of sound that would thrill of selected proteins or specific parts of DNA. That idea upsets or amuse scientists, for the simple reason that such a great advance in science that require experimental validation is still lacking after 20 years of existence.

THE APPEAL AGAINST LOSS OF LICENCE POINTS

Such a treasure, the secret and mystery of the method to retrieve his points are well guarded by a few insiders. More and more drivers are facing a situation where they may no longer have sufficient credit points to continue to drive and are unaware that there is a judicial process to avoid losing points or for again. Indeed, there is a radical procedure to recover the lost points on his driver's license (30% increase in litigation between 2006 and 2007 + 40% between 2007 and 2008). Since the introduction of the system of driver's license points, the judges awarded the administrative procedural flaws such as failure to notify in due form of violations, remedies and their deadlines.

We are getting very modern

ICT training for teachers is the issue that has entertained me this year. With training centers in my school (IES El Palo), experimentation with digital books, a course in CEP de Málaga, and many breaks in the comment I gladly and resolve the difficulties posed by the use of ICT in the classroom keep boredom at bay since last September.

The first conclusion after the first half of course is that the arrival of the School ICT 2.0 has been a shock final for the effective incorporation of ICT in teaching practice in the IES El Palo, the fact that students of 1 º ESO bring your laptop has been a huge boost and more than twenty teachers have decided to complicate your life, also with ICT. In addition to the School of Languages, in addition to the tutorials, etc..

Surely there are several factors behind this change, the educational potential of these tools, the fact that we no longer decide when to ICT for students in the classroom and bring in the backpack, the possibility of receiving training in the center ... For these and other reasons the fact is that there is a very interesting dynamic of experimentation with different types of tools (blogs, Moodle, digital books, ...) which is already beginning to bear fruit.

Nini told me recently, a colleague of Physical Education, students told their teachers that we were getting very modern this year, that many e-mail asking, they have to read (and even write) blogs, we send homework digital platforms, etc.. Another partner, Eulogia, recently told me that his class of 1 º ESO looked like a school as his students worked on our Moodle platform focused on the tasks she had prepared.

Mind the Gap Between the train and the platform

Mind the gap
Imagine have to take the train to the 2.0 and Social Media, involves abandoning the platform. But to do so, before we hit a jump to avoid falling into the gap in the middle.

In this breach of the half, I've been down more than a brand they believe to be in a democratic direction to the 2.0 and Social Media and do nothing but use the tools without content of value. It would be good to remind the annoying but conscientious London Underground announcement "Mind the gap, Between the train and the platform"

As my friend Albert, "Social Media is serious" and only talk without having a clear strategy is to generate unwanted content or "falling into the gap. "

I understand that everything new revolution and a revolution will make mistakes, but be more careful and plan well enough not to reap negative consequences. Sometimes it's better to let a little deafening noise and start planning how it will be the real social personality of the brand. Relax, the tools are not necessary to use them all because if it is time to use your head and be creative

ELECTIONS IN THE UNITED STATES, THE CHOICE IS BETWEEN OBAMA AND MC CAIN

The Nov. 4 election approaching, U.S. citizens must decide between Barack Obama and John McCain to lead their nation, and the population is still divided between both candidates. The decision is based primarily on the benefits each offers to improve the country, which at the end of the period of George W. Bush, seems to be getting worse.

Both came to the nomination by their respective parties through the process of pre-candidacies for McCain, belonging to the Republican Party, the road was shorter and less costly, for Obama, enlisted in the Democratic Party, found it difficult to be faced with Hillary Clinton, who ultimately conceded defeat.

Political marketing plays an important role for the electorate, can make a decision, and have a common denominator campaign "dirty" to discredit each other. However, the time when mass media is used to carry voters to the main ideas of their campaigns, such as goals or targets priority in their plans.

Among the main topics on the agenda of both candidates, found the discussion of withdrawal or troop deployments in Iraq and the economic crisis afflicting the country and has been compared with that of 1929, about the positions they have assumed each will support the program that Bush raised for the rescue of the economy, on the other hand McCain decided to suspend his campaign to assist in resolving the crisis.

In addition, as part of their political strategies, the election and appointment of second in command, ie which will be Vice-President of the United States should Deuno side wins, for that McCain has chosen Sarah Palin, who was governor of Alaska until just before his nomination, and Obama introduced Joe Biden as an option to promote their way to the presidency.

Barnum and Forer effect

In the 1940s, psychologist Bertram Forer, following a discussion with a handwriting night-club, carried out an experiment with (or?) 39 students. They passed a projective test (that is to say a Rorschach test type) which is to establish a picture of their personality. They then makes a 13-point description of their personality, supposedly established on the basis of the test. In fact, they all have the same description. The results are published in the 1949 article.

So quite striking, students felt that their picture was a very good description of themselves. In reality, the descriptors used by Forer are very vague, rather positive or neutral, often double-meaning, but mostly they apply to 'anyone. Thus, everyone can find something like it: this is what the phenomenon called Drill subjective validation, but we then called "Forer Effect". In 1956, Paul Meehl renames the "Barnum effect"because the publicity circus Barnum says there there's a little something for everyone
